Researchers at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) have found ways of turning a notorious invader plant, Tree-of-heaven, into something descent and usable.

The Tree-of-heaven, was introduced as an ornamental tree planted in gardens in South Africa, but it is originally from China.

The tree is reportedly also taking over many parts of the United States.

Researchers at the University of Johannesburg’s PEETS Programme (Process, Energy, and Environmental Technology Station), said making use of Tree-of-heaven, for bio-manufacturing, presents a chance to transform an environmental issue into a useful resource.

Researchers say the first step of engagement, was to identify, characterize bioactive compounds in the tree.
Then the determination of viable a-scale extractions from the tree, were tested and extraction parameters set.
This includes the best ways of getting components from the tree, or extraction techniques.

The results of extraction for a longer period, are  a dried bark from the trunk and root, used for diarrhea, asthma, cramps, epilepsy, fast heart rate and Gonorrhea.
It is also usable for menstruation pain and related infections.
