Unplanned outages reached about 7,265 Megawatts (MW), on,Friday, the 22nd August 2025.
Eskom said this is the first time the generation fleet has operated below the 8,000MW, since 11 December 2020.
Daphne Mokwena, Spokesperson of Eskom, said between 1 April and 21 August 2025, unplanned Capability Loss Factor (UCLF), which reflects the percentage of generation capacity lost due to unplanned outages, further decreased to 27.85%.
“This represents a week-on-week improvement of approximately 0.29%, although it remains about 2.0% higher than the 25.81% recorded during the same period last year.”
She also said the open-cycle gas turbine (OCGT) load factor further decreased to 0.78% this week from 1.21% the previous week (8–14 August 2025). The OCGTs is used to tackle occasional system constraints during peak mornings and evenings.
