The Magalies Water board, informed residents of discoloration of drinking water from the Balkfontein Water Treatment Works.
This is water supplied to residents of Matjhabeng Nala, Maquassi Hills Municipality.
Magalies Water said the matter of discoloration, was brought to its attention by Vaal Central Water Board (VCW).
VCW says the water is harmless, and got its color after the heavy rains. “The discoloration is due to excessive presence of organic matter in the Vaal River.”
VCW also said further investigations are ongoing to find conventional methods to remove color from the water.
Elsewhere in Rustenburg, water from the Vaalkop – Bospoort Supply Scheme, also had a brown colour. This is water that supplies the Royal Bafokeng areas.
Following testing by specialists from the Services Department, water was found to comply with SANS241 regulations.
