Some 150 people were killed by floods in Nigeria, since the start of heavy rains on Thursday.
About 19 States received heavy rains, with some areas receiving more than 140 mm, in less than 24 hours.
Worst affected cities and rural areas are Lagos, Abuja, Enugu and Ibadan.
Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Executive Governor of Lagos, visited some affected communities in Lagos, where both residential and businesses were disrupted.
“The heavy rains have placed significant pressure on our drainage infrastructure. As a coastal state, high tide and rising lagoon levels often prevent floodwater from draining quickly. But I also saw major drainage channels blocked by plastic waste, household refuse and banned Styrofoam. This is unacceptable. Anyone caught dumping refuse indiscriminately will be prosecuted according to the law” he said.
He also said he directed the relevant agencies to intensify drainage clearing operations and provide support to affected communities while the government continues to monitor vulnerable areas.
