The City of Johannesburg, through City Power, launched the first phase of an Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Complex in Booysens, last week.
This transition is expected to significantly lower fuel costs and boost operational efficiency across municipal services.
City Power said this demonstrates commitment to staying abreast of global technological advancements and ensuring Johannesburg remains competitive, efficient, and future-ready.
It cost R14 million to set up this initial part of a hub, in a plan to convert City Power’s 680-vehicle fleet.
Speaking at the launch, Dada Morero, Mayor of Joburg, said “the financial case is compelling. Through the transition to electric vehicles, City Power is positioned to realise substantial cost saving up to R29.7 million per annum under a leasing model, and as much as R 49.3 million annually, if the vehicles are acquired outright and amortised over a five-year period.”
