About 444 firefighters and eight aircrafts, are some of the resources deployed to fight ongoing wildfires, in Greece’s fifth-largest island, Chios.

Five wildfires in the area, have forced 17 communities to evacuate, since Sunday, the 22nd June 2025.

Farms, homes, and infrastructure were all destroyed.

As a result, Loannis Kefalogiannis, Civil Protection Minister of Greece, said the country has declared a state of emergency, as a result of multiple fires.

He also said the decision was made so the authorities could “immediately take the necessary measures”.

IQAir (who monitor air quality), said depending on wind direction, wildfire smoke could impact air quality in nearby cities, like Athens, Greece, Izmir and Turkey.
