Leon Kluge won double gold at the Greater Bay Area Flower Show 2024, part of the Shenzhen International flower show, held in China from the 23rd of March until the 01st April 2024.
He returned back from China this week with great news of winning gold for 2 shows.
The flower show, held just outside Shanghai, showcased about 44 gardens.
Speaking to Earthnews365, Kluge said “both our exhibitions received gold and best design.”
He is an international garden designer, and artist, from South Africa, who has won several gold awards at international shows, including the Chelsea Flower show in 2010 and 2012.
Now he heads off to Korea next, before the much anticipated Chelsea show in London.
“The grootbos garden will be in London and that is going to be in early May. That is the Chelsea flower show- which is the big one!” said Kluge.
South Africa has won 36 times at the Chelsea Show in the United Kingdom.
Kluge expressed excitement at being back at the show, after a four year pause, as a result of COVID. He said this year’s theme at the upcoming Chelsea show, will showcase fynbos and its eco-tourism boost in the Cape.
Fynbos is a shrubland occurring in the Western and Eastern Cape.
It is a mega diverse family of the Proteaceae, Ericaceae, Rutaceae and Iridaceae.
There are 9000 species of Fynbos plants, of which over 6000 are endemic to the Cape. Some 1,736 of these are critically endangered, endangered or vulnerable, according to the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI).
