The George Municipality in the Western Cape is urging residents, visitors, and the business fraternity, to ramp up efforts to save water.
This is due to a decrease in water levels at the Garden Route Dam, which is the main source of supply for the town.
The dam is only at a 50.98% storage capacity, despite recent rainfall, measured at 12mm, between 18 and 24 November 2025.Last year, this time, it was 100% full.
Browen Johnson, George’s Mayor, said “this is a critical time for George. Our dam levels are dropping, and demand is increasing as visitors arrive for the festive season. I urge everyone, from households to businesses and guests, to use water responsibly. Saving water now is not just necessary — it is our shared responsibility to secure George’s future.”
The Municipality also urged residents to adhere to Level 2 water restrictions.
