There are 312 trees that are between 10 and 15 meters high, along the Braamfontein spruit in the Parkhurst area.

Joburg City Parks and Zoo says these trees are “encroaching upon a Delta-Orlando 88kV power servitude.” This has led to an increase in the number of power outages in area, according to the entity.

“Failure to remove these trees will subsequently result in the damage to City Power’s infrastructure such as the substation and transformer alongside private properties.”

In a statement, it also said that the removal of protected trees in the city’s open spaces is not condoned.
Project removal is expected to begin during Arbor Week, on the 7 September 2023 and continue for another 3 to 5 weeks.

Residents in affected areas will be kept updated.

City Parks & Zoo issued fines in excess of R246 000 last year, for residents who chopped down indigenous trees. Fines can go up to R60, 000 per person for removing trees without following correct processes.
