In less than a year, City Power, has set up renewable energy integration projects such as microgrids as well as the procurement of energy from Independent Power Producers (IPPs).
The installation of rooftop solar PV is also underway.
Jack Sekwaila, Mayoral Committee Member of the Environment and Infrastructure, in Gauteng, said ” the City is committed to achieving net zero emissions. Transitioning to a cleaner energy mix and promoting energy efficiency, will help the City reduce its energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.”
The City of Johannesburg, relies heavily on Eskom for electricity supply.
Sekwaila said the City’s climate action plan, requires a move away from reliance on Eskom, and working with more IPPs.
Thus far the City has installed microgrids in Alexandra township.
It will be pushing to install rooftop solar panels on municipal buildings, health facilities, schools, the Joburg market and other public buildings.
The City will also implement other projects such as wheeling, where large power users will be encouraged to purchase renewable energy directly from IPPs and then transmit it through the City Power network.
Last year alone, about 92 Megawatts were delivered to the City via IPPs.
