Alderman Xanthea Limburg, Mayoral Committee Member in the City of Cape Town, said renewable projects to secure energy, include wheeling and the cash for power scheme, both part of the small-embedded programmes of the City.
She said through this project, Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and traders are able to transport and sell electricity directly to customers.
The City has facilitated the trading of 861,162 kilowatt-hours (kWh) through the wheeling programme.
Buyers of this electricity include Shoprite and Growthpoint.
The city plans to secure up to 350 Megawatts (MW) of energy from independent power producers (IPPs).
Limburg, was part of a panel at the Africa’s Green Economy Summit, interviewed by media personality, Lerato Mbhele.
Narend Singh, Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DAFF), also at the Summit, said there is a need to address multiple challenges, hindering the conversion of “brown fields to green ones.”
Singh said it is important to include other sectors in the journey to net zero- such as strengthening smart agricultural practices.
In addition, between 20 % and 25% of carbon emissions, come from the transport sector, requiring an intervention in taxis, e-hailing services and freight.
