Khalesakhe Mchunu, a municipal worker from uMsinga Local Municipality, was tragically killed in oFabeni in uMsinga, on Wednesday.

This is one of a series of murdered workers in KwaZulu Natal.

Just last week, an official from the eThekwini Municipality, was also killed and others injured, when unknown gunmen opened fire on their vehicle.Days before that incident, 32-year-old Nokulunga Mashabane, was found with a gunshot wound in KwaDukuza.

Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, said these attacks paint a disturbing picture and demand immediate attention from law enforcement agencies.

“I am deeply concerned by these developments, which unfortunately suggest a worrying trend that must be nipped in the bud. These attacks on public servants, who are dedicated to serving our communities, are unacceptable and undermine the very fabric of local governance.”

Buthelezi has called for urgent intervention of law enforcement agencies, to ramp up investigations into such brutal crimes, by locking up perpetrators.

He has also called for municipalities to beef up security of employees.
