City Power is celebrating the successful installation of a medium voltage cable in Randburg.
The cable is part of a R3.5 million project, launched in September 2024, to install and normalise a 1.5- kilometre medium voltage (MV) line between the Randburg Substation to Hawken Switching Station.
It is expected to improve electricity supply to Bromhof, Boskruin, Sonneglans and surroundings.
Tshililo Nefale, General Manager at the City Power Randburg Service Delivery Centre, said “this project is a direct response to the repeated and prolonged power outages that customers in Bromhof, Boskruin, and Sonneglans have had to battle with. By adding this new feeder cable, we can now backfeed affected areas during unplanned outages, significantly reducing downtime and improving overall supply reliability.”
Older cables are highly vulnerable to frequent failures, cable theft, and vandalism.
Tshifularo Mashava, CEO of City Power, said “Our ageing infrastructure has long been a target for criminal activity. To combat this, we are not only replacing old cables but also introducing advanced technology and security features into our network across the city.
New cables incorporate tamper-resistant materials and smart monitoring systems, enabling City Power to detect unauthorised access or interference in real time. This will greatly assist in safeguarding the infrastructure and reducing financial losses due to theft and damage.”
