The Observatory to Bellevue cable replacement and transformer project is nearing completion, City Power announced on Wednesday, the 08th October 2024.
This follows a devastating fire in December 2023, which gutted the Observatory Substation.
The significance of the replacement work, is improvement in the Region’s infrastructure and service enforcement for residential blocks and business in the inner City.
This critical emergency project, required the replacement of 88kV oil cables, in order to modernize and reinforce the electrical network between Observatory and Bellevue Substations.
Jack Sekwaila, MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services, said “I have had several meetings with the community since the fire broke out in December 2023, which caused the subsequent power supply challenges, in several parts of the inner City. I have also had regular engagements with the community leadership and Councillors, to ensure they are updated about the ongoing plans.”
Last month, City Power completed work on a 63-year old faulty oil cables, and laid new ones.
The installation of high voltage is complete, as well as accompanying tests.
Sekwaila said he is confident, that although the project encountered minor delays, work is expected to be completed by the 11th October 2024.
