The blocking of the main road from Pennyville, near Noordgesig, by Johannesburg residents, is expected to continue this week, past the 07th of October.

Residents blocked the main New Canada Road and the N17 Highway, bringing traffic to a grind.

An anonymous resident said this is one way to keep Joshco (the Johannesburg Social Housing Company) out of the area.

The squabble dates back to more than 7 years ago, concerning grey areas about whether flats of concern, were sold or rented from the local entity- Joshco.

A woman caught stranded on Tuesday, who also wanted to remain anonymous, wrote on a local community group, that she is pregnant and stuck, and could not get out of the area, due to the protest.

She said “but I’m in so much pain and I’m unable to get out of pennyville Phase 1. The ambulance is also taking long, I even tried calling the police. My husband can’t get into pennyville cause of this strike please help. What can I do.”

Another frustrated resident, echoed the sentiments of being locked in by protesters “at noordgesig when they strike, they do open for their people to come out or come inside, but at new Canada, those people are refusing to let the people with cars enter. I had to go park the car at the garage highgate and walk.”

Daisy Lesenyego, Spokesperson of Joshco said 6 units were given eviction orders, delivered by the Sheriff, due to non payment, on Monday.

She also said there is no ownership at any of the JOSHCO units, it’s rental stock.

“Yes, we are doing evictions on JOSHCO rental units” said Lesenyego.

Beneficiaries are South African citizens, employed and earning between 1,5K to 22K per month.
