A 600 mmm diameter sewer pipe in popular South End beach, failed over the weekend, spewing into Kings Beach, in Humewood, part of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.

The Metro said a contractor worked at the problem over the weekend, but due to a swamp and overgrown bush and trees, ditched the job, making way for more specialized equipment and machines.

The contractor was scheduled to start removing trees, to locate sewer manhole.

The Metro said in a statement on Monday “teams will continue dosing the affected spillage area.” This is expected to lower E-Coli levels and the associated stink.

“We encourage residents to stay clear of the affected area, until declared safe.”
