The Onrus Estuary was closed yesterday, due to the presence of e-coli and enterococci in the water.

A statement from the Overstrand Municipality said yesterday, that the public is warned not to swim in the estuary until further notice.

The source of the spike in bacteriological results is unknown, and officials from the Municipality confirmed there were no sewer spillages from municipal infrastructure.

The Onrus beach is not affected by this, but should the water samples be found not to meet water quality standards for recreational areas, it will remain closed.

Warning signs have been erected to advise visitors and residents.

It is not the first time that bacteriological results have been in the spotlight, local organizations such as the Onrus River Estuary Forum, having been calling for a risk assessment of repurcussions of Ecoli levels at the river mouth.
