Police stumbled upon piles of chromite ore, after responding to reports of illegal activities at the Sefateng Chrome Mine, in Limpopo, on Friday, 13 June 2025, around 1am.
Police said a Vala Umgodi Task Team in the area, arrested a 38-year-old and a 17-year-old Zimbabwean males, for illegal mining and contravention of the Immigration Act.
The suspects were detained at Mecklenburg station, along with seized items- a blue jackhammer, a generator, two wheelbarrows, a pickaxe, a shovel, electric cords, a 20-liter petrol container, and a liter of petrol.
Two other suspects, aged 45 and 39, were also arrested on charges of illegal mining and contravention of the Immigration Act, at the Bokone Platinum Mine.
A generator, two jackhammers, four shovels, electric cords, a white multi-plug, a white Toyota Hilux, and a TATA tipper truck with chromite weighing 21,140 kg, were confiscated.
