Levels of water in the Mthwalume River has decreased significantly.

As a result, the Office of Sandile Mkhize, Chief Executive Officer of uMngeni-uThukela Water Board said on Sunday afternoon, a section of the river abstraction system which draws water from the Mthwalume River, is not able to function efficiently.

This has inhibited the Water Treatment Works from drawing the required daily raw water volumes to treat.

“The Raw Water Abstraction System is an essential component of the Mthwalume Water Treatment Works’ ability to supply potable water to the uMzumbe and uMdoni Local Municipalities under the Ugu District. Consequently water supply to the Ugu District has been curtailed by approximately 40%.”

The system is expected to recover on Thursday, the 7th of November 2024.

Areas impacted are in uMzumbe and uMdoni Local Municipalities, specifically, Elysum, Bazley, Ifafa, Koelwater, Sezela, Mthwalume Urban, Qoloqolo, Nomakhazana, Sibanini, Bhekulwandle, Mfazazana, Sihlonyaneni, 26, Arnold Lushaba Hospital, Nkambini, Bhunwini, Makhoso, Bangibizo, Dembese, Mathulini, Nyangwini and Mgangeni.
