South Africa’s wind energy real price has decreased by 50%, from R1.88/kWh to R0. 49kW/h, making it more cost-effective.
Globally, there is a record increase by 14%, in costs, from 265 TWh to 2,100 TWh.
This is according to the EIA Wind Electricity Tracking.
This places wind energy the second highest growing energy technology in the world.
This emerged at the WINDABA, a flagship industry conference, organized by the South African Wind Energy Association (SAWEA), supported by the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC).
About 900 delegates are expected to attend the event, which kicked off on Wednesday the 02nd October and will end on Thursday, the 03rd October 2024.
Morongoa Ramaboa, Chief Communications Officer, of SAWEA, said ” WINDABA 2024, is more than a conference, it’s a catalyst for advancing South Africa’s renewable energy agenda.”
Ramaboa also said SAWEA, is dedicated to harness SA’s abundant wind resources for a resilient and sustainable development.
According to Niveshen Govender, CEO of SAWEA, there are about 36 energy projects currently, amounting to about 3, 442 Megawatts of wind energy were installed.
This supplies an estimated 3,6 million households per annum.
Speaking at WINDABA, Govender said 22, 985 jobs were created by the wind energy sector.
