Residents of uMgungundlovu District are breathing a sigh of relief at the news of the returning the 53 Pipeline.
The uMngeni-uThukela Water Board has announced the return of the 53 Pipeline which was shut down late last month.
The pipeline was temporarily shut down to to allow for the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) to undertake repairs on the N3.
The Water Board said it expects the pipeline to come back into operation on Thursday, 27 February 2025.
The shutdown, which started on 27 January 2025 was to allow SANRAL to relocate approximately 200m of the pipeline as part of its N3 upgrade project.
This caused the uMngungundlovu District and parts of the outer west of the eThekwini Municipality which are supplied via the 53 pipeline to experience water interruptions.
While the shutdown was in progress, uMngeni-uThukela Water said it embarked on repairs to sections of the pipeline that had been leaking.
“While these repairs were successfully completed, the pipeline remained out of commission as SANRAL while still busy with its work.”
