Residents on the WhatsApp Group managed by Wild Serve, an urban biodiversity conservation organization, are privileged to get first hand information of Johannesburg’s wildlife.

Although Wild Serve rescues injured, orphaned and other wildlife, the WhatsApp group allows residents to report sightings of Jackals in Joburg, instantly.

But while out and about, looking for a Genet, in Roodepoort, Wild Serve’s Dirk Engelbrecht, also spotted what looked like a lady Jackal, near Hoërskool in Florida.

Earlier in November, a resident from Greenside, also saw a Genet around 8:30pm, in an Acasia tree, close to her home.

Inspector Pam Pretorius, General Manager at the SPCAs in Midrand also saw a Genet, in November, which was hit by a vehicle, and laid lifeless on the road.

Genets walk, trot, climb up and down trees, run, and are able to stand on their hind legs. This is because most of their lives is spent both in trees and on the ground.

Although they feed on plants and fruit, they also feed on small animals and insects.
