WaterCAN’s fourth annual Citizen Science Water Testing Week, got underway as from Monday the 15 to end on Friday, the 19 September 2025.

About 5,000 tests were conducted, since the start of the campaign, four years ago, in partnership with schools and communities. This makes it the country’s largest database of citizen science water testing, which has exposed pollution and related risks.

Dr. Ferrial Adam, Executive Manager of WaterCAN, said “citizen science is not just about collecting data, it is about creating a culture of involvement. Every test adds a piece to the puzzle of South Africa’s water crisis, but more importantly, it builds a movement of people who care enough to act.”

The official launch will be held on the 18th September at the Johannesburg Zoo, in partnership with Joburg City Parks and Zoo.

This year’s focus is on teaching young people about water health, equipping them with the knowledge and tools.
