Gordy the Elephant Seal, found by a resident trying to navigate Sir Lowry’s Road in Gordon’s Bay on Thursday early morning, is out of water again.
After a nine hour rescue to return him to sea, by multiple organisations, on Wednesday afternoon, Gordy was spotted on Thursday, at a Naval base, in Simon’s Town.
Earlier on Thursday morning, The Cape of Good Hope SPCA said he is currently safe and secure in a location where he cannot access any roads, and there’s no immediate risk to his well-being.
He is a young male, estimated to be around 5 years old.
The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) and participating institutions in Elephant seal research off mainland South Africa, will continue to monitor Gordy.
“For now, he’s simply resting, which is completely normal behaviour. We’ll continue to monitor him closely and we’re ready to step in if he shows any sign of distress or needs help” said the Department.
