Hundreds of flights were diverted from Heathrow Airport in London, after a fire broke out in the early hours of Friday morning, the 21st March 2025.
Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, said the airport is closed as a result of a fire at a nearby electrical substation.
As a result, nearby homes and businesses are without electricity.
“I know this will be hugely frustrating for the many thousands expecting to travel to and from Heathrow today, the families who have had their power cut and the commuters who have had their journeys disrupted.
I’d like to thank the emergency services who have been working hard overnight to tackle the fire, and I remain in close contact with them, as I have been overnight. Thankfully, there are no reports of any injuries” said Khan.
Electricity suppliers are working to restore power, but the Airport remains closed all day.
“Passengers are advised not to travel to the airport under any circumstances and I urge Londoners to follow the advice of emergency services and their travel providers.”
This happens days after Heathrow airport said it is getting closer to its net zero targets, with a reported 7.5% carbon reduction in the air, and 15% on the ground since 2019.
