The Nala Local Municipality announced the sewer spillage at Wesselsbron (Mothopeng area), is receiving attention.
In addition, the municipality said it has elevated the matter to high priority status.
This is the second time this month, the town’s authorities have met with communities, who conducted several protests last year, about health hazards associated with sewer spillage.
On the 14th of January 2026, Molatudi Mothibi, Speaker of the Municipality, said the area has experienced persistent sewer overflows linked to a manhole that was constructed in their area.
“Despite several previous interventions, the issue has remained unresolved, prompting residents to formally raise their concerns with the municipality.”
He also said the Director of Technical Services plans to replace the affected section of the sewer pipeline.
“A formal motivation has been submitted to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Municipal Manager (MM), and the Administrator for approval” said Mothibi.
A service provider was appointed to begin construction on Thursday, 22 January 2026.
He said in the interim, municipal workers will continue with regular unblocking and maintenance of the sewer line to mitigate the impact on residents until a permanent solution is implemented.
A concerned resident, Mr Noko, acknowledged that the sewer spillage has been resolved but wants the Municipality to find a permanent solution.
He also said the problem has been there for over 20 years.
