Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, Acting Police National Commissioner, said 255 offenders of Gender based violence (GBVF) were handed sentences of between 1 and 9 years in prison.

148 received sentences of between 10 and 19 years.

About 75 perpetrators were sentenced to 20 years and above.

71 received life imprisonment.

Professor Firoz Cachalia, Acting Minister of the Police, said crime statistics were those reported, at 1,175 police stations across the country.

58 people are murdered daily, and 140 sexually violated.

The Eastern Cape recorded the highest number of murders, accounting for 14,3% of the country’s lot.

The Western Cape, accounted for 93% of the country’s gang-related murders.

Gauteng leads in terms of violent crimes, amounting to 57,1% of carjackings in the country, 54,8% of kidnappings and 48,4% of all cash-in-transit robberies.

Cachalia said an emerging trend of concern is the growth of the construction mafia, especially in the Western Cape, adding up to 57 of 131 cases.

Dimpane said reforms to tackle crime include investing in modernised forensics, training detectives, improving case management systems and expanding specialised investigative capacity.
