Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo,National Assembly Chairperson of Portfolio Committee on Health, said he is concerned about recent findings of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), made public on Monday.

The SIU’s Andy Mothibi, exposed maladministration at the Tembisa Hospital, valued at R2 billion.

Mothibi was speaking at a media briefing, alongside,  Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, the Minister of Health, as well as  Joe Phaahla, the Deputy Minister,   Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng Premier.

The explosive report, found at least three coordinated syndicates involving officials and service providers, were responsible for the looting of billions.

About 15 current and former employees of the hospital, were involved in related corrupt activities, money laundering and collusion to rig bids.

According to the SIU, the number of identified officials is expected to rise as the investigation continues.

Dr Dhlomo said the committee views these findings as serious and very concerning. He said findings show a breach of public confidence and an unacceptable diversion of much-needed health resources from the most vulnerable members of society.
“Some of these officials supported the syndicates with impunity, and there must be consequences. Such criminality cannot go unpunished” he said.
