Extreme weather conditions continue over the Namakwa interior and the West Coast, as well as most parts of the Western Cape.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) said daytime temperatures are expected at between 37° and 42°.
Multiple incidents occurred in Cape Town yesterday as a result of the heatwave.
A truck overturned at Sir Lowries Pass, near Gordon’s Bay, colliding into another one, carrying pigs.
Firefighters kept spraying the pigs with water to keep them hydrated.
The Cape of Good Hope SPCA said traffic on the N2 at Sir Lowry’s Pass came to a standstill when the incident happened.
The Cape of Good Hope SPCA and 3 other Cape Animal Welfare Forum member organisations, counted about 200 pigs on the scene.
4 died and 2 had to be euthanized due to severe injuries.
Jaco Pieterse of the SPCA, said “It was a scene of unimaginable distress, but despite the chaos, the collaborative efforts of animal rescue teams, emergency services, and law enforcement made a significant difference.”
JP Smith, MMC for Community Safety in the Western Cape, said in the afternoon, a wild fire broke out close to Atlantis, with the inferno sweeping across dry vegetation in the area.
About 5 fire engines and choppers were sent to respond to the fire.
He said the chopper took turns to drop about 1200 liters of water to the flames, until the fire was contained.
