Other countries in the Southern Africa Region are on high alert, following reports that cyclone Chido continues.

The alert of more rain and flooding was made by the Joint Typhoon Warning Centre, Meteo-France and Cyclocane.

The cyclone, expected in the next few days, will most likely affect Madagascar, Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Residents are advised to take necessary precautions, including evacuating low-lying areas and avoid travel unless necessary.

Intense tropical cyclone CHIDO made landfall over the island of Agalega on Thursday, accompanied by gusts of more than 295km/h.

JTWC / Meteo-France & Cyclocane, said fortunately, CHIDO has been slowly weakening since last night, which is good for the northern side of Madagascar.

However, it remains a very dangerous cyclone.

Initial trajectories estimated the landfall of Chido with Mozambique on Sunday around 8 am but now could hit much earlier, at around 4 or 5 am.

At this stage, Chido is not expected to pose a threat to South Africa.

In response to news of Chido, Greenpeace Africa said on Friday, “this is the human cost of a warming planet driven by fossil fuels. It’s time to end fossil fuels and protect lives from climate disasters.”
